Stay Ahead of the Curve: New Legislations for Aesthetics 2023
Published: September 14, 2023The world of aesthetic medicine in England is on the brink of transformation with changes coming into force that will affect practitioners across the country. The UK Government has initiated a pivotal consultation aimed at enhancing the safety and regulation of non-surgical cosmetic procedures. Recent years have witnessed an alarming increase in reports of 'botched' procedures, leaving patients dissatisfied and often physically and emotionally scarred. The pressing need for safer, more regulated practices within the sector is clear, and the government is stepping in to address these concerns.
This development offers doctors, dentists, pharmacists and nurses a unique, time-sensitive chance to stay at the forefront and safeguard their businesses, considering the proposed requirement for healthcare professionals to have their premises certified - all before the new regulations for aesthetics come into effect.
In this blog, we delve into the details of the proposed regulations and explore how you can seize this opportunity to enhance your skills, ensure compliance with future laws, and ultimately, thrive in the evolving landscape of aesthetic medicine.
What is being proposed at this stage?
The scheme focuses on 'cosmetic procedures,' defined as non-surgical or dental treatments for cosmetic purposes and these encompass:
- Injection of substances
- Application of substances penetrating the epidermis
- Needles inserted into the skin
- Threads placed under the skin
- Application of light, electricity, cold, or heat
Procedures are categorised by risk:
Green (Low Risk): Practitioners meeting agreed standards can perform these without additional oversight. Includes micro needling, mesotherapy, IPL/LED therapies, and more.
Amber (Medium Risk): Non-healthcare professionals need licensing and oversight by qualified healthcare professionals. Qualified healthcare professionals can perform without oversight. Procedures include botulinum toxin injections, dermal fillers, and more.
Red (High Risk): Reserved for specified regulated healthcare professionals, regulated by CQC. Not part of local authority licensing. Includes thread lifting, hair restoration surgery, and more.
